The Vice President's diaries span the years 1870 to 1922 in three volumes documenting St. Ignatius College from its opening day on September 5, 1870 to its rechartering as Loyola University Chicago in 1909 and its eventual move to the Lake Shore Campus in Rogers Park in 1922. The diaries contain day-to-day observations of St. Ignatius College faculty and students including illnesses, deaths, classes, sports, and programs; civic events the Chicago Fire, the Haymarket Square riots, the World's Columbian Exposition, the Spanish Influenza epidemic, and Armistice day; the purchase of land for the new college, founding of the Loyola School of Law, addition of the School of Medicine, and dedication of Loyola Academy. From approximately 1915 to 1922 the diaries include more information about St. Ignatius High School and Loyola Academy than the University. Entries are lacking for some periods; the most notable absences being for February 26th to September 4th, 1871, the entire year of 1875, and January through August 1884.
